Project Description
The UMB – School of Economics is a non-profit organization that provides children with the experience of earning money and making wise spending and saving decisions. It is a reality-based educational experience targeting schools in the Kansas City, MO school district. Ross Construction was selected for the construction of a new downtown location. Construction included demolition of an existing kitchen and cafeteria to make way for a new 4,000 SQFT facility. The renovation included new mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and finishes to provide new restrooms, “storefronts”, and instruction space.
The new facility allows the School of Economics to double its capacity by serving an additional 12,000 students each year. School of Economics Director Sue-Ann Johnson said in an article in the Kansas City Business Journal, “While we’re thrilled that teachers and students have such a large interest in our program, we always struggle to accommodate requests due to the limited number of days in the school year. With the help of UMB, this expansion will provide much-needed resources, including space and volunteers, to expand the opportunity of an economic simulation to more area youth, including students from under-served areas.”
